Tell us about yourself (Who are you? Where are you from? What is your educational background?)
I am Hugo Oliveira and I am from Portugal. My background is in Analytical Chemistry, essentially applied to the development of analytical methods for
environmental analysis.
What is your area of expertise?
My area of expertise is the development of new methods for chemical analysis, with a particular focus on the sample preparation.
Where does your focus lie within your current project(s)? (related to methane)
My current project related to methane aims the development of high throughput methodologies able to quantify methane chemical biomarkers from
rumen archaea.
What would be the added value for you of joining an international researchers network? (such as the
METHAGENE network)
The measurement of methane in a large-scale is very complex and challenging task that could not be solved by any individual. For this reason,
this network is perfect place to share experiences and learn from others, which will contribute for the progress of the research of all participants.
What and/or who inspired you to make a career in science?
All people that I’ve been meeting throughout my (short) career have been giving to me important inputs that I try to accumulate and learn from them.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The opportunity to contribute for a more sustainable planet.
What is your most stand-out or surprising moment in science so far?
The oddest moment so far was ending up in Antarctica with a team of oceanographers. Analytical chemistry is everywhere!
