Successful session on ‘Climate smart cattle farming and breeding’ at EAAP in Warsaw

During the Annual meeting of the European Association of Animal Production (EAAP) in Warsaw, Poland, a successful meeting was held on Monday, August 31st, 2015. The session was organised by METHAGENE COST Action FA1302) and RuminOmics (EU FP7 project) in collaboration with the cattle commission of EAAP. The session was the best attended session at the EAAP, showing how much the topic lives.

The morning was dedicated to invited speakers setting the scene for climate smart cattle farming and breeding. The first part of the afternoon was introduced by Jan Lassen who gave an overview of “genetic approaches for methane mitigation strategies”. This introductory talk was followed by several selected abstracts related to measuring methane and genetics of methane. The second part of the afternoon was introduced by Phil Garnsworthy who gave an overview of “variability among dairy cows in methane, digestibility and feed efficiency”. This introductory talk was followed by several selected abstracts related to feeding and microbial populations.
